Americanism Essay Contest Information

2024-2025 AMERICANISM AWARDS

        AMERICANISM AWARDS – May 4, 2025

We are very proud to report that Americanism essay award winner Chloe Bilbrey won Second Place in Division IV in the Oregon State Elks Association (OSEA). Winning at this level is remarkable, considering the competition is State-wide.

We presented the OSEA plaque and a check for $40.00 for her winning efforts. The presentation was held during the 1858 Breakfast on May 4, 2025. She was accompanied by her parents, Robin Cumper and Andrew Bilbrey.

Grand Lodge determined the theme:

“What Does Patriotism Mean to Me?”

Chloe was our local Second place winner in the 8th grade division. She attends Siuslaw Middle School studying under teacher Kelly Dotson.

The Grand Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks annually offers an Americanism Essay Contest. The theme for this year was, “What Does Patriotism Mean to Me?” The essay contest is open to students in the 5th through 8th grades. Florence Elks Lodge #1858 sponsors the local com petition and invites student participation from the Florence, Reedsport and Mapleton area. The winning authors and their proud family members attended dinner and the awards presen tation at the Florence Elks Lodge on Thursday, March 6, 2025. For the 7th grade division, we are honoring stu dents attending Reedsport Community Charter School under teacher Kaylie Laskey: 1st place - Kendall Dillahay 2nd place - Angela Austin 3rd place - Harper Spurgeon For the 8th grade division, we are honoring these students: 1st place - Pearl Jensen. She is a student of Academy by the Sea. 2nd place - Chloe Bilbrey. She is a student of Kelly Dotson at Siuslaw Middle School. 3rd place - Aubrey Carrington. She was not able to attend. She is a student of Kaylie Laskey at Reedsport Community Charter School. These winning essays will be judged at the Oregon State Elks Association State essay competition in April with the hopes of being select ed to move forward to the national contest in July. A great big thank you goes out to our Essay Judging panel: June Irvin, Lynn Hughes, Jolyne Alaniz and PER Barb Tyler. Our Lodge is very grateful to all our members who are vigilant in assuring that our flags are properly displayed, lit, retired and kept in flying condition. Means to Me.” The essay contest is open to students in the 5 th through 8 th grades.
Florence Elks Lodge #1858 sponsors the local competition and invites student
participation from the Florence, Reedsport and Mapleton areas.

The winning authors and their proud family members attended dinner and the awards
presentation at the Florence Elks Lodge on Thursday, March 7, 2024.
The 7 th grade First place winner was Pearl Jensen, who attends Academy by the Sea.
Second place was awarded to Aubrey Carrington, a student at Reedsport Community
Charter School. Third place went to Payton Hill, also a student at Reedsport Community
Charter School.
The 8th grade First place winner was Sailor Jensen, who attends Jensen Academy by
the Sea. Second place winner Danika Durchevski and Third place Payton Hill are both
students at Reedsport Community Charter School.
The winning essays have advanced and will be judged at the state-wide competition in
April. The theme for the 2024-2025 year will be announced in August.
