Annually the Elks National
Foundation provides the Most Valuable Student (MVS) Scholarship
applications for senior high school students to compete for financial aid
for their college education. Each student is judged on scholarship,
leadership, and financial need.
Florence Elks Lodge services Siuslaw, Reedsport, Mapleton, and Triangle
Lake High Schools. This year we received 14 MVS applications. The highest
scoring girl and boy were determined, and both were from Reedsport Charter
High School. The girl is Rebecca Hedges and the boy is Taylor Ladd. They
have each won $1,000, which will be awarded to them when they verify their
college enrollment in the Fall of 2011.
On Saturday, December 11th their applications were taken to the Northwest
District competition in Tillamook. Taylor Ladd placed second in the boy’s
competition and will be awarded an additional $1,600, plus move on to
State competition for larger rewards. Rebecca Hedges placed third in the
girl’s competition and will be awarded an additional $1,400. How-ever,
third place does not move on to the State level.
Florence Elks Lodge #1858 congratulates each of these students on their
success and wishes them the best in their college studies.
