How to View Windows Clipboard Contents Easily in Windows XP and Windows 7

Q:
What is the Windows Clipboard?

A:
The Windows clipboard is used to temporarily store stuff. This “stuff” can come in the form of just about anything. Images, files, documents, etc.—they can all be placed on the clipboard. Once something has been copied to the clipboard it can be pasted into another location.

The clipboard isn’t a program you can actually access and play with. It’s a built-in windows component that works transparently. When you copy or cut, the info is put onto this clipboard. When you paste, the information that’s on the clipboard is put into whatever it is you’re working on.
It can only hold one thing at a time. What ever you copy to the clipboard stays there until you put something else in the clipboard or you turn your computer off.

Think of it as a old fashion clipboard or a littlie box

Sometimes you may wonder what is inside a clipboard before you decide to overwrite it with something else or start pasting it into document. Instead of viewing the content by opening up notepad or word document and paste it, there is a quick way that enables you to know the clipboard content with just a simple click.

To display the clipboard content, user can do it by running clipbrd.exe and it will show you the clipboard content once it is launched. Clipbrd.exe comes together with Windows XP and it is located under C:\WINDOWS\system32. In order to access this utility in faster way, you can create a shortcut and put it in your desktop. Follow below steps to create the shortcut for this utility:

1) Right click on the empty area on desktop, then select New->Shortcut.
2) The ‘Create Shortcut window’ will pop up, type:

%windir%\System32\clipbrd.exe

and click Next button.
3) Type a name for this shortcut as you like, for example: Clipbrd.exe or just CLIPBOARD
then click Finish button to create the shortcut on your desktop.

To view the content of your clipboard, just double click this shortcut and it will display the clipboard content immediately. For windows Vista, this utility is not part of windows Vista package. To enable this feature, you can copy clipbrd.exe from windows XP into C:\Windows\System32 in Vista, then create a shortcut on desktop to access it directly.

How to Retrieve the Clipboard Manager Windows 7

Unlike XP, the clipboard cannot be viewed in Windows 7. You need a copy of clipbrd.exe from an XP computer. It is located in C:\WINDOWS\system32. Copy it into the same folder in Windows 7 and to run it, click the Windows Orb (Start), type clipbrd and press Enter

How to Retrieve the Clipboard Manager

  1. In XP, open the folder named C:\windows\system32 and look for this file: clipbrd.exe
  2. Download it from here: clipbrd

Soon as you’ve got the file, copy it to a desired location, preferably the System32 folder of your windows installation. You may get an error from Windows telling you that the Clipboard Service isn’t running. You can easily ignore this error and use the program anyway.

Then make the shortcut as explained above
